TYPES OF TREATMENT

  • MANUAL THERAPY
    • Manual therapy is a "hands-on" treatment. There are several different philosophies and types of manual treatment. Examples are joint mobilization, soft tissue mobilization (deep tissue work), manual stretching, manual traction, muscle energy techniques, manual traction for the neck or back, etc. Some therapists are specifically trained in the Maitland Approach, or other specific types of treatment. However, all therapists use a combination of treatments to achieve the best possible outcomes.
  • THERAPEUTIC EXERCISE
    • Therapeutic exercise for the treatment of sports and orthopedic injuries may include; sports specific activities, pre & post operative rehabilitation, dynamic spinal stabilization programs as well as addressing muscle imbalances that may be contributing to chronic injury. Exercises that isolate specific muscles (such as the rotator cuff, or transversus abdominis muscles), as well as yoga type exercise, balance re-training may be part of your rehabilitation process, depending on what is appropriate for your specific needs.
  • TRACTION
    • Mechanical and manual traction can be used for opening the space between vertebrae and has been shown to be beneficial for patients with a disc bulge, and can help alleviate referred pain originating from the spine.
  • MODALITIES
    • Modalities are typically used for pain control or edema and may include: ultrasound, electrical stimulation, iontophoresis, phonophoresis, ice, heat, etc. Your therapist will determine which, if any, modality is appropriate. Modalities are often utilized at the end of treatment sessions, after the exercise and manual treatment are completed.
  • PATIENT EDUCATION
    • Educating patients with regard to symptom management, pathology/prognosis, and a home exercise program help enable patients to manage their pain or dysfunction, promote healing, and prevents future episodes. Patients are also educated regarding their posture, alignment with exercises, and body mechanics during the course of treatment.
